Safe shelter: M. Jayaraman, Collector, handing over the key of a tsunami permanent house to a beneficiary in Nagapattinam on Wednesday. NAGAPATTINAM: Non-Governmental organisations (NGOs) and the Government agencies engaged in the construction of about 3,700 permanent houses in the tsunami-affected areas in various parts of the district have been instructed to complete the work as early as possible for handing them over to the beneficiaries, said M. Jayaraman, Collector, here on Wednesday. Speaking at a function to mark the handing over of permanent houses to 60 families of the tsunami temporary shelters at Kadambadi that were built at Saveriar Kovil Street here by the Thanjavur Multipurpose Social Service Society (TMSSS) at a cost of nearly Rs.2 crore, Mr. Jayaraman said that out of the target of 19,736 permanent houses for the tsunami-affected families in the district, 16,045 houses had already been handed over to the beneficiaries. He pointed out that the remaining houses were under various stages of construction and would be completed within a few months. Mr Jayaraman said that the tsunami permanent houses were built at 70 locations in the district and the NGOs had spent more than Rs.2 lakh per house for its construction. The Government was providing all infrastructure and basic amenities including protected drinking water, streetlights, roads, etc for the tsunami houses colonies.
