SWIFT SEIZURE: The weapons and cash recovered by the police following the arrest of three men in a robbery case. — CHENNAI: In less than 24 hours after the robbery near Koyambedu in which three jewellery shop employees from Madurai were attacked and relieved of Rs.40 lakh, the city police apprehended three of the 11 armed gangsters and seized some of the money. The weapons and vehicle used to commit the crime were also seized. Commissioner of Police R. Sekar told presspersons on Wednesday that a special team, led by Deputy Commissioner of Police (Anna Nagar) M. Pandian arrested A. Michael (29) of Kodungaiyur, R. Kumar (26) of Vyasarpadi and P. Yogeswaran alias Mani (26) of Madhavaram when they were about to escape to Andhra Pradesh. The trio was in possession of Rs.10.25 lakh and the van used to abduct the complainants. “A sensational case has been resolved…we are following specific clues that will lead to the arrest of others involved in the robbery soon,” he said. Mr.Sekar said the gangsters had already made an attempt to rob the same victims last month. Pointing out that it was not advisable to carry huge amount of cash without adequate security, he said inputs on the van’s registration number helped the police crack the case. Scientific evidenceIn the case pertaining to the death of an unidentified person whose charred body was found in Ashok Nagar, he said the police were adopting scientific methods to identify the deceased. “There is no need for the people to panic about any psycho killer. At least 300 police personnel have been deployed on night patrolling, particularly in residential areas. We are focussing more on Vadapalani and Ashok Nagar. There are vital clues about the suspect and the modus operandi.” Investigators were working closely with the Forensic Department in resolving the case of two suspicious deaths recently, including that of a watchman who was found dead at Vadapalani. “It does not look like the work of a professional killer,” he said and added that Narayana Bhatia, an intelligence official of Nepal, who was reported missing in a section of the media was staying at his sister’s place in Varanasi. Joint Commissioners of Police M. Ravi (North) and P. Balasubramanian (Central) were also present.
