Tale of woe: M. Kavitha and P. Kaveri, quarry workers, narrating their plight.
PUDUKOTTAI: Quarry workers, all belonging to two women self-help groups at Kunnavayal, near here, have been idling for the past couple of months, awaiting the renewal of lease for their quarries.
The workers, numbering 39, all members of the Cauvery Amman Self-Help Group and Madhavi Self-Help Group, have been eking out their livelihood for the past five years after obtaining the lease rights for a couple of quarries in the area. With the term having come to a close during the last week of April, they have to suspend their activity.
Pointing to the several administrative procedures involved in the renewal process, they said they would not be able to resume their economic activity for one more month.
Summer being the ideal period for quarrying the stones, they said they had already lost a good part of their peak business period.
Temporary relief
Their only solace is the temporary permits sanctioned for quarrying specific quantities.
“But, the permit is only a temporary relief and very limited as it could give us work only for a week,” say a cross-section of women members.
According to officials, the units at Pudukottai formed part of the total 21 quarries under the process of renewal. The last date for submission of application for renewal by all these quarry managers was July 10 and as many as 32 applications had been received for these quarries.
Every document for renewal needed scrutiny.
An interview of the members of the SHG would also be held.
The Special Committee headed by the Collector would be convened for approving the renewal at the end of which a notification in the District Gazette would be issued, the official said.
