Over 1,500 CPI workers held for staging demonstration
Staff Reporter
The cadres were protesting against move to set up SEZ in Hosur
Hosur: Over 1,500 Communist Party of India (CPI) workers were arrested here on Wednesday for staging a demonstration in front of the Hosur railway station protesting against the setting up of a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in the district.
The party’s State secretary D. Pandian led the protest.
Mr. Pandian opposed the government’s plan to acquire 3,230 acres of fertile land in Bairamangalam, Kunthumaranapalli, Onnalvadi and Achettipalli panchayats. If the fertile lands with assured water supply were acquired, more than 5,000 farmers’ families would be affected.
The government should not forcibly take away the lands of farmers who were not willing to part with it. It should not deprive them of their livelihood in the name of industrial development, he said.
Cash crops
Cash crops such as cabbage, beetroot, carrot, cauliflower and cut roses were being cultivated in Bairmangalam and 10 other villages which have been selected for establishment of the proposed SEZ.
Thally MLA D. Ramachandiran and district secretary P. Nagarajareddy were present.
