TIRUCHI: With a major part of civil works already over, the new prison for women coming up in the city has entered the final stage of construction.

The jail, which can accommodate 600 inmates, is coming up on a total area of around 7 acres in the busy Gandhi Market area. The construction of the prison was taken up by the Public Works Department at a cost of Rs. 9.98 crore.

Prison authorities told The Hindu on Wednesday that the construction of three-storeyed dormitory blocks, individual cells, administration, ration store buildings, prison hospital and a crèche to take care of the wards of inmates and a work-shed had been completed.

The PWD has also completed the construction of two high security blocks, admission block, second line security wall, video conference hall, kitchen and a separate building to conduct prison adalat for the inmates.

Each of the two high security blocks will have live wire fencing atop the building with 20 individual cells inside to house prisoners involved in sensitive cases. The second line security wall will also have live wire fencing.

The prison will have 24 dormitory blocks, each of which can accommodate 20 inmates. The two dormitory blocks alone will accommodate chunk of inmates.

Of the five watch towers planned at strategic points around the prison, two have been constructed. The first line security wall work is on. Laying of approach roads and construction of water tanks are pending completion.

Nearly 75 per cent of the work had been completed, a senior official said adding that the remaining would get over in a couple of months.

Presently, women prisoners are lodged in the Special Prison for Women inside the sprawling Central Prison complex near Kottapattu here. There are over 250 inmates including 46 life convicts.
