CUDDALORE: Health Minister M.R.K. Panneerselvam gave away free laptops to 33 students, who scored high marks in the Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) examination, during a function held at Andarmullipallam Government Higher Secondary School near here on Tuesday. The Minister said that the laptops, each worth about Rs 20,000, had been given to the meritorious students to help them in their education. The State government had launched several programmes to improve literacy and notable among them was the free bus pass scheme, for which it had earmarked Rs 100 crore. The government had also sanctioned Rs. 15 crore for performing surgeries to students below 12 years of age, suffering from heart problems, Mr. Panneerselvam said. Industries such as Nagarjuna Chemicals, ship building yard and Cuddalore Power Company were scheduled to be set up in Cuddalore with a total investment of Rs. 7,500 crore. These had the potential to provide jobs to over 10,000 educated youths, he said. Collector Rajendra Ratnoo called upon the teachers to improve literacy through conducting periodical tests and special classes for slow learners. Chief Educational Officer R. Veerasamy, Revenue Divisional Officer R. Brinda Devi, tahsildar Shanmugasundaram and Andarmullipallam panchayat president Sankar were present at the function.
