Champions Trophy volleyball

Chennai: A Champions Trophy league volleyball tournament is being scheduled for next month here.

The competition will involve the top six teams from the men’s senior division league which concluded on Sunday.

Chitrapandian, Secretary, Chennai District Volleyball Association, said only the top eight would be retained for the next edition of the senior division league.

The following is the final position of teams in the senior division from 2008 (read as played, won, lost, points): Indian Overseas Bank, 12-12-0-24; Southern Railway 12-10-2-22; Indian Bank 12-10-2-22; Sathyabhama 12-8-4-20; SDAT 12-7-5-19; ICF 12-7-5-19; Commando Police 12-7-5-19; State Bank 12-5-7-17; Armed Police 12-5-7-17; BSNL 12-4-8-16; Central Excise 12-2-10-14; TNEB 12-1-11-13; Chennai City Police 12-0-12-12.

Burhamuddin shines

S. Burhamuddin scored an unbeaten 88 to set up a 106-run victory for Kaligi Ranganathan School against Terapanth Jain Vidyalaya in the Boost-C. Ramaswami Cup under-16 School cricket tournament here on Monday.

Kaligi Ranganathan MMHSS 227 in 28.5 overs (S. Burhamuddin 88 n.o., M.M.V. Hariharan 38, K. Hitesh three for 33, B. Hemanth three for 43) bt Terapanth Jain Vidyalaya MHSS 121 in 18.2 overs (Sanjay Bothra 28, P. Mahaveer 25, B. Jeevan four for 11); Govt. HSS ‘B’ 207 for four in 30 overs (M.N. Madan Kumar 79 n.o., M.P. Prithvi Neal 46) bt Vyasa Vidyalaya MHSS 86 in 20.5 overs (V. Chockalingam four for 18).

State junior chess

The 37th SRM Tamil Nadu state junior (under-19) FIDE-rated chess championship for the S. Ramakrishnan Memorial Rolling Trophy and the 22nd SRM TN state girls’ under-19 championship for the V.V. Rajamani Memorial Trophy will be held at the Hall of Performing Arts, SRM University, from July 15 to 21. This is the first time the state junior championship is being organised as a FIDE-rated event.

Purushotaman and Raman win

Purushotaman and Raman, with a nett score of 62, won the R.S. Mani Trophy golf event at the Madras Gymkhana Club golf annexe.

T. Geetha and R. Premalatha (nett score 66) were the runners-up.

In the Bharath Associates Trophy putting competition, Tarun Veeraraghavan and Abiram Uday, with 27 putts, were the winners, while R.S. Ramprasad and Raj Dharmaraj (27 putts), finished runners-up.

Kirmani’s lectures

Syed Kirmani, the former India wicket-keeper and member of the 1983 World Cup-winning team, will talk on the topic Winning Edge, a lecture series on success stories, at the Hotel Deccan Plaza on July 16.

RPF basketball

The inter-Divisional RPF basketball tournament was inaugurated on Monday by C. Elangovan, Controller of Stores, ICF. The final will be held on Wednesday.

Football tournament

The DAV Group of Schools will conduct the second Shrimathi Prabha Jaidev memorial football tournament for boys from July 15 to 18 at the DAV Senior Secondary School Premises, Mogappair.

The tournament is open to Chennai City schools, and 20 teams have registered.
