FMSCI looks to rope in new sponsors

Chennai: The FMSCI, which has been granted power by the FIA to function as the motor racing body in India, was hopeful of new sponsors coming in.

“This will eventually benefit the competitors,” said Rajat Majumdar, president, FMSCI, speaking to presspersons, here, on Saturday.

The FMSCI, replacing MAI, has been recognised as the official motorsports body in India by the FIA. However, the MAI has appealed against the verdict and the hearing will be held in Paris on July 29. Vijay Mallaya heads both the FMSCI and the MAI.

Mr. Majumdar said the FMSCI would strive to secure an Arjuna Award for India’s first Formula One driver Narain Karthikeyan. “He is a wonderful driver and a humble human being. He deserves the award,” said Mr. Majumdar.

He added that there would be “no witch-hunt against the MAI.” Mr. Majumdar affirmed, “All existing licenses would be valid until December 31.”

The FMSCI president hinted at more foreign participation in the Indian races. He added, “We would involve the Government and the industry to make the highest level of technical equipment and training available to the sportsmen besides bringing in international two-wheeler motorsport events like the FIM Asian GP, Asia Nations Cup, and FIM Asian Supercross.”

Mr. Majumdar said the FIA had promised to extend its cooperation to the promoters of the Indian Grand Prix F-1 race, scheduled for 2010. — Special Correspondent
