A.P. power plant gets CDM recognition

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: Nava Bharat Ventures has announced that the bagasse-based cogeneration power plant in its Samalkot (East Godavari district) sugar factory has been registered under clean development mechanism (CDM) programme.

The project has been so recognised owing to its reduced carbon emission levels, according to a company release.

Alternate source

Cogeneration is an alternate source of creating value out of sugarcane, as power is produced through the combustion of bagasse, a sugarcane waste. With the registration under CDM programme, the project will become eligible to receive certified emission reductions (CERs) for the power it produces and supplies to the grid. This will earn some more revenue to the company. Initial estimates put the reduction of carbon-dioxide emission to the tune of 16,000 tonnes a year.

P. Trivikarm Prasad, Executive Director of the company, said that the power plant would be expanded to produce 29 MW from the current 9 MW.
