Chennai: Over 5000 competitors, drawn from about 150 schools from Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Kerala, will figure in the three-day South Zone inter-school sports festival being organised by St. Joseph’s College of Engineering from July 12. Over 130 schools from Tamil Nadu alone will be part of the five-discipline event. The events for both boys and girls are ball badminton, basketball, volleyball and kabaddi. The football event would see as many as 60 schools participating. Contests in basketball and volleyball are likely to be the highlight thanks to the participation of Mount Carmel School (Kottayam), St. Joseph’s and SDNT (Thrissur). The track and field championships will be held separately on July 19 and 20 since a majority of the athletes are to be part of the State junior meet to be held at Thiruvarur next weekend. The winner of each discipline will get Rs. 6000, the runner-up Rs. 4000 and the third and fourth-placed teams taking home Rs. 3000 and Rs. 2000. For athletics, the first place prize money will be Rs. 500 with Rs. 300 and 200 for the second and third places. Big winVidya Mandir bowled St. John’s (Baba Nagar) out for 36, handing it a 199-run defeat in the SMCA-Independence Day Trophy under-13 tournament on Wednesday. The scores: Union Christian 135 for five in 25 overs (S. Chandar 53, E. Vignesh 46) lost to St. Patrick’s 136 for four in 21.2 overs (G.V. Vignesh 60). Sri Sankara 94 in 26.4 overs (K.B. Dixit three for 10, Sanjay S. Prakash three for 12) lost to Modern SSS 98 for one in 12.2 overs (G. Vikram 27 not out, P. Krishnan 54) Vidya Mandir 235 for three in 25 overs (Athreya Ramkumar 55, Arjun Arun 27, B. Rohith 59, R. Nikhilesh 25) bt St. John’s (Baba Nagar) 36 in 18.1 overs (R. Aravind three for five, K. Nithin three for eight) Maharishi Vidyamandir 75 in 22.3 overs lost to Chinmaya Vidyalaya 76 for two in 12.4 overs. Indian Bank, IOB topIndian Bank and Indian Overseas Bank were on par with 18 points each after nine matches in the IOB-SRM senior division volleyball league championship.
