NEW DELHI: The Union Sports Ministry is treading cautiously while dealing with the autonomous sports federations, but is “keeping a close eye” on the selection of athletes. At the State Sports Ministers’ meeting at the Vigyan Bhawan here on Wednesday, Union Sports Minister M.S. Gill said selection of eligible athletes was important but the Government had limited powers to curb the irregularities. “Selection of athletes should be fair. However, democratic freedom of the associations is also important. It’s a complex thing,” he said in response to Manipur’s request to consider the proposal of giving more powers to government in selection matters. Later, while talking to reporters, Mr. Gill, however, preferred to keep a distance from the ongoing selection controversy and bribery scandal in the Indian Weightlifting Federation. “It is not my business to go into each and every sports federation and control it. But I will make sure that injustice is not done to any sportsperson. All these matters are coming up because selections (for Olympic Games) are on. But we are keeping a close eye,” he said. Addressing the Sports Ministers, Mr. Gill said under the Panchayat Yuva Krida Aur Khel Abhiyan inexpensive sports like football, volleyball, basketball and athletics should be promoted in rural areas. He said there was a shortage of coaches in various States and the Ministry would try to meet the demand. On selection of players for various sports awards, including the prestigious Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award, Mr. Gill said he would form a committee which would do justice to the nominees. About India’s prospects at the forthcoming Olympics, Mr. Gill said he would anxiously wait to see the performance of the 4x400m women’s relay team. — Sports Reporter
