Promoting education: Addition of new colleges will encourage good competition. —

COIMBATORE: Engineering counselling for general category is set for July 11. There is an abundance of new colleges in Anna Universities in Chennai, Tiruchi, Tirunelveli and Coimbatore. And Coimbatore walks away with the maximum number.

Out of the total 72 engineering colleges (70 in Tamil Nadu, 2 in Puducherry), 28 colleges (six all women colleges) are affiliated to Anna University, Coimbatore, according to its Vice-Chancellor R. Radhakrishnan. The university, when set up here in February 2006, had 55 engineering colleges.

In 2007 it added on 16 to take the figure to 71.

This academic year it has added another 28 to stop just short of the 100 figure (99 as of July 9, 2008).

According to Mr. Radhakrishnan, the addition of new colleges will encourage good competition that might lead to colleges doing away with capitation fees.

Infrastructure facilities

He attributes the following for the increase: “The existing colleges are providing good infrastructure facilities and adhering to the AICTE and university norms. The university and affiliated colleges are becoming tech-savvy. The syllabus and even the classroom lectures are going to become digital in all the colleges.” Besides, he believes that the mushrooming of colleges in the region vis-À-vis others, is owing to the industrial background and business houses promoting education that ensure enough resources are available to provide the colleges with good facilities.
