Navdeep, Gajjar ousted

New Delhi: Navdeep Singh and Rohan Gajjar squandered good starts to bow out of the $15,000 ITF event in Damascus, Syria even as three other Indians advanced to the second round of the hard court event.

Navdeep lost his first round match 6-1, 3-6, 1-6, to Tomas Janci of Slovakia while Gajjar lost 6-1, 6-7(5), 2-6 to Japanese Arata Onozawa.

However, Ranjeet Virali-Murugesan, Vignesh Peranamallur-Chandrasekhar and Rahul Makharia kept the Indian challenge alive with their first round wins.

Murugesan hardly broke a sweat to beat Syria’s Hayan Maarouf 6-4, 6-1 while Chandrasekhar had to toil hard to defeat Nigerian Candy Idoko 4-6, 6-3, 7-5.

Rahil advanced after a comfortable 6-2, 6-2 win over local favourite Wael Chami.

In another $15,000 ITF event in Turkey, National grass court champion Vishnu Vardhan had to dig deep into his reserves to beat seventh seed Valentin Sanon of Cote D’Ivoire in the first round. He won 3-6, 7-5, 7-6(4). — PTI
