One CRPF man killed, 3 injured

Guwahati: One CRPF man was killed and three others injured when suspected militants of Dima Halam Daogah (Jewel), also known as Black Widow, ambushed a patrol party of the central paramilitary force near Maibong in southern Assam’s North Cachar Hills district on Wednesday.

Police said the incident occurred around 7.30 a.m. The injured jawans have been admitted to the Maibong Civil Hospital. The outfit’s declaration of unilateral ceasefire expired on June 23.

A militant of United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) was killed in an encounter with the police near Sonapur in the outskirts of the city. The police said the slain militant was from the ULFA’s 27 Battalion.

In another incident, the troops of 4 Kumaon of Double First Brigade in the Red Horns Division rescued a leopard cub while carrying out operations in East Garo Hills of Meghalaya.

The troops, operating under Colonel S.K. Dutta, Commanding Officer 4 Kumaon, found the cub inside a gunny bag.

Col. Dutta said that apparently poachers, after sensing the movement of security forces, abandoned the cub and fled. Brigadier Pankaj Sinha handed over the cub to Divisional Forest Officer Amol Sharma.
