Absence of basic amenities at deportation camp alleged

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Eleven foreign nationals awaiting deportation to their native place in the deportation camp here at R.K. Puram have written a joint letter to the Delhi High Court Chief Justice drawing his attention to “absence of basic amenities” at the camp.

They complained that the quality of food served to them was abysmal and the lodging was poor. There was no facility for medical care or telephone facility to communicate with their families back home.

The camp is maintained by the Foreign Regional Registration Office (FRRO) to keep foreign nationals for a limited period before their deportation formalities are completed for sending them back to their native place.

They have also sent a copy of the letter to FRRO and Chairman of the National Commission for Human Rights. A Division Bench of the Court comprising Justice A.P. Shah and Justice S. Muralidhar converted the letter into public interest litigation and issued a notice to the Delhi Government seeking its reply on July 30.
