New Delhi: Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court Cyriac Joseph was sworn in Supreme Court Judge on Monday. Chief Justice of India K.G. Balakrishnan administered the oath of office to him at a brief function at his court. Mr. Justice Joseph (61), who hails from Kerala, will have a tenure of about three years and seven months. With this appointment, the number of judges in the apex court has gone up to 24, against the sanctioned strength of 26, including the CJI. Mr. Justice Joseph was appointed judge of the Kerala High Court in July 1994 and after about a month, he was shifted to the Delhi High Court, where he served till September 2001. He was sent back to the Kerala High Court in September 2001. After serving there till March 2005, he was elevated as the Chief Justice of the Uttarakhand High Court. In January 2006, he was transferred to Karnataka. Mr. Justice P.D. Dinakaran, Judge of the Madras High Court, is to be elevated as the Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court to succeed Mr. Justice Joseph. The appointment is expected shortly.
