Abhishek and Ashwini claim under-10 badminton titles

Abhishek defeated S. Vignesh in the final

BANGALORE: R. Abhishek and Ashwini Bhat claimed the boys’ and girls’ titles respectively in the under-10 section of the Canara Bank State-ranking badminton championship at the KBA courts here on Monday.

Abhishek defeated S. Vignesh 21-14, 21-10 in the final, while Ashwini beat Apeksha Nayak 21-18, 21-12. Abhishek went on to complete a double, annexing the doubles crown partnering Nikhil Sriram.

The results: Boys: Under-10: Final: R. Abhishek bt S. Vignesh 21-14, 21-10.

Under-13: Semifinals: Sudeep Suresh bt Harshith Agarwal 21-18, 18-21, 21-15; Suraj Shetty bt Nachiket 21-9, 21-8.

Under-16: Semifinals: Vinay Hari bt L.U. Chirag 18-21, 21-15, 21-16; Shashank Menon bt Rajas Jawalkar 10-21, 21-15, 21-13.

Girls: Under-10: Final: Ashwini Bhat bt Apeksha Nayak 21-18, 21-12.

Under-16: Anagha Unni bt Reshma Karthik 21-15, 10-21, 21-11.

Under-13: Semifinals: Reshma Karthik bt Monisha Gowda 21-15, 21-15; Vaishnavi Iyer bt Priya Prakash 21-15, 21-15.

Doubles (finals): Boys: Under-10: Abhishek & Nikhil Sriram bt Vignesh & Aditya Padival 21-16, 19-21, 21-13.

Under-13: Suraj Shetty & Nachiket bt Yash Lad & Anish Upadhye 21-9, 21-14.

Girls: Under-13: Shreya Lokkur & Priya Prakash bt Mahima Agarwal & Monisha Gowda 17-21, 21-17, 21-17.

FAPS wins

Frank Anthony Public School (FAPS) won the Cottonian Shield Twenty20 Cricket tournament for Under-14 by 36 runs over Presidency School (R.T. Nagar), at the Bishop Cottons School ground here today.

The scores: FAPS 160 for four in 20 overs (K. Dhanush 66) bt Presidency School (RT Nagar) 124 for nine in 20 overs (Rakshith 62, Shimon Luiz three for 10, Aashish three for 7).

Special prizes: Best batsman: Mohammed Safi (Presidency School, R.T. Nagar; 159 runs). Best bowler: Harish Kumar (Bishop Cottons, 11 wkts). Best all-rounder: Dheeraj (FAPS; 120 runs and six wickets).

Inter-school cricket

The second edition of the Boost inter-school cricket tournament (u-16) will get underway here on Tuesday.

The Procam International-promoted venture has grown in strength and the current edition has attracted 111 teams. It will be played on a league-cum-knockout format over two phases.

The winner of the final phase will represent Karnataka/Bangalore in the Boost Cricket Cup inter-city challenge.

Presidency School (RT Nagar) is the defending champion.

Narrow win

Bishop Cotton’s Boys High School recorded a narrow 1-0 victory over host St. Joseph’s Boys High School in the Centenary Shield inter-school hockey tournament for seniors at the KSHA stadium here on Monday. Abhishek Kumar scored the match-winner in the first half for Bishop Cottons.

In the Father Eric Vaz Memorial tournament for juniors, St. Joseph’s Boys High School ‘A’ beat St. John’s Boys High School 1-0 with U. Pranay scoring the winning goal two minutes after the first half.

Hockey tournament

The Karnataka State Hockey Association will conduct the T. Shanmugham memorial inter-school and inter-collegiate tournaments from July 29 to August 9 at the KSHA stadium.

Students up to Class X can take part in the inter-school event, while the inter-collegiate tournament will be for students studying in the PU College of the same institution.

Schools and colleges in Karnataka may send their entries for the tournaments before July 16 to the Secretary, Karnataka State Hockey Association, Rhenius Street, Langford Town, Bangalore. More details can be had from K. Krishnamurthy at 22277007 / 98452-78847.

State basketball

The ‘B’ division State basketball championship league for the Sri M.C. Srinivasa Memorial trophy will commence at the Sree Kanteerava stadium outdoor courts from July 14.

The final is slated for July 19. Twelve teams are in the fray

‘Thanksgiving’ time

It was ‘thanksgiving’ time after the inaugural Sunfeast World 10K Bangalore run, held on May 18, this year. The event, in its inaugural year, generated Rs 41.35 lakh for the 36 charities associated with it and Bangalore Cares- the charity partner -came up with its share of thank-you’s to the various corporates, associations and individuals.

T.C. Meenakshi Sundaram was the highest individual pledge raiser to the tune of Rs 4.25 lakhAssociation of People with Disabilities was the highest pledge raising NGO with Rs.7,13,403, while among Corporates, Cares Northern Trust raised the highest amount of Rs,1,25,160.

Three best published photographs of the mega event were also awarded. Shrikanth Sharma of Deccan Heralad won the first prize of Rs.25,000 for the best picture (dead-heat of the Elite women’s 10K run), while Selvan Shivkumar of Bangalore Mirror (Rs.15,000) and K. Sridhar (Vijaya Karnataka, Rs.10,000) were the second and third prize winners.
