Sports hostel to open this month

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala University’s centralised sports hostel for men will start functioning this month.

The hostel, which will be run with the financial assistance of the Kerala State Sports Council (KSSC), will be housed at the G.V. Raja pavilion at the University Stadium.

The KSSC will provide a daily dietary allowance of Rs. 65 and playing kits to the trainees while Kerala University will provide accommodation and coaching facilities. The mess will be run by the Kerala University at the G.V. Raja pavilion.

“We have conducted selection trials and short-listed 18 footballers, 14 athletes and 12 volleyball players for the hostel. We are trying to get in sponsors and awaiting grant from the university to enhance the daily dietary allowance,” said Eugene Sunil, Director of Physical Education, University of Kerala.

“To begin with we have only three disciplines but we have plans to include wrestling and handball next year. But, it will depend on the success of the project,” he said.

Kerala University, which had run a sports hostel for girls from 1989 to 1991, is the only University in Kerala to start a sports hostel of its own. — Principal Correspondent
