No warning board

Every day hundreds of buses, cars, vans, heavy vehicles, lorries, and goods containers are passing through the river overbridge between Thiruvallur and Manavalanagar, which was thrown open two years ago. There is no caution board on either side to warn the drivers to move slowly on the bridge to avoid accidents.

The Highways Department is therefore requested to periodically check the bridge to ensure safety.

Indian system of medicine

The Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University should also introduce Indian system of medicine to treat animals and birds in veterinary institutions all over the State to benefit poor farmers.

The Union government, which renders financial aid to improve colleges of Indian system of medicine, could also consider helping to improve the infrastructure for initiating Indian system of veterinary science and introducing various disciplines such as Ayurveda Siddha and Homeopathy in its colleges.

Basic necessities

The Poonganagar Cooperative Society Fair Price Shop housed on Kannabiran Street-II (Shop No. B-019) lacks even the basic necessity of electricity. Because of this, both the employees and the public are put to much difficulty, especially after 6 p.m.

Moreover, because of a leaky roof in this shop, ration articles are getting damped during rainy days making them unconsumable.

Will the authorities do the needful to address these problems?

MRTS trains and stations

Most of the MRTS trains and racks are old and poorly maintained. The racks may be let on contract to advertisers and newly painted.

Most of the stations are incomplete and in need of basic amenities such as toilets and ticket counters near the platforms (all ticket counters are on the ground floor and the stations on the II floor). There are no proper approach roads. Bad odour wafts through from the Cooum river.

Pending projects

Several projects of Pallavaram are yet to be completed:

(1) The underground drainage scheme is progressing at a snail’s pace (2) The road overbridge work (Pallavaram-Thuraipakkam) on GST Road is totally stopped (3) The subway work at LC-27 is a non-starter (4) The foot overbridge with an escalator facility near the Chromepet railway station finds no work at the project site (5) The Venkatamangalam compost yard even after seven years is not ready (6) Closed for alterations and modifications, the gasifier crematoria are yet to be reopened (7) The desilting of stormwater drainage is not taken up (8) The widening work of RP Road, Radha Nagar main road is pending.

We appeal to the Pallavapuram and the government to expedite these projects for the benefit of people.

Delay in link canal work

This is with reference to the proposed link canal to drain water from the Veerangal Canal to the Pallikaranai marsh.

I had asked for information on the government approval for the canal and construction work. I was surprised to see that even after 10 months, the project is still waiting for approval.

Also, in his reply the Executive Engineer has said that it will take 9 to 12 months to complete the project after finalistion of tenders. So, it is evident that the new canal will not come before this monsoon.

I would request the Government to give high priority and start the canal work as soon as possible.

Pedestrians’ woes

There is heavy traffic in front of Vijaya Hospital, Vadapalani. Pedestrians find it difficult to cross the road. Hence, I request the Commissioner of Police (Traffic) to post a traffic police at the spot.

One-way system

The Karuneegar Street at Adambakkam near St. Thomas Mount Railway Station is lined up with business establishments and marriage mandaps.

Lots of vehicles pass through the street, creating traffic jams frequently. The vehicles parked by people transacting business in the shops added to the confusion.

There are two adjacent roads — one, Yadaval Street, which is a little narrow, and Mastan Gori Street which is reasonably wider to cope with vehicles during rush hour. Will the traffic police declare this Karuneegar Street as one-way (at least from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. and 5.00 p.m. to 7 p.m.)?

LPG subsidy

The State government has issued an order on the subsidy of Rs. 30 for households having single cylinder LPG connection (The Hindu July 1).

Our Indane distributor at Ambattur collected Rs. 339.60 from me for the gas supplied on 02-07-2008, though I am a single cylinder holder. On my enquiries, the officer concerned said the agency would “take decision” later.

When the announcement of gas price hike came, the distributors were in a hurry to increase prices. Now the poor consumers have to wait for the mercy of the agency to avail themselves of the subsidy given by Government.

Auto drivers’ attitude

I was shocked to read a news item in The Hindu dated 28-06-08 about an autorickshaw driver assaulting a passenger who was a respectable citizen.

Engaging an autorickshaw for travel is almost equal to street fights on many occasions. Imagine a person who holds a respectable position in an office engaging an auto to go to his office on a Monday morning. The bargaining and quarrel will disturb his mood and his routine work will be affected. \

If the Traffic Department enforces the law of using electronic meters strictly, there is no room for such nasty things. When the helmet rule is enforced so strictly, what prevents the traffic police in enforcing this meter rule is still a mystery. In no other city this kind of atrocity is allowed and even bigger cities like Mumbai have this meter system strictly enforced. How long will the people of Chennai be subjected to this kind of ill-treatment at the hands of

autorickshaw drivers because of the indifference of traffic authorities?

Road not laid

I have been a resident of Velachery Dhandeeswarar Nagar 6th Main Road Avenue from 2004 falling under the Chennai Corporation (Ward No.153). The road is in worst condition and was laid long ago.

Recently, on 2nd Cross Street & 3rd Cross Street (near 6th Main Rd Avenue), a road was laid. But 6th Main Road Avenue was left out. More than 12 to 15 houses are here. I request the authorities to take up this matter immediately?
