In raids by the Commercial Taxes Department

Inter-State luxury buses operating in the Bangalore-Kozhikode sector checked

Goods valued at Rs.10 lakh to Rs.15 lakh smuggled on a daily basis: officials

Kozhikode: The Department of Commercial Taxes (Intelligence) has detected large-scale smuggling of goods valued at Rs.10 to Rs.15 lakh on a daily basis in luxury buses plying the Bangalore-Kozhikode sector.

A raid carried out by officials on 15 buses on Saturday revealed that most of the luxury coaches plying on the inter-State route transported electronic goods, readymade garments, bronze and brass vessels, zinc and copper plates. Goods worth Rs.10 lakh were seized during the raids. As many as 22 luxury coaches ply in the sector.

A team of officials led by Assistant Commissioner K.P. Sajeevan conducted the raids from 4.30 a.m. to 7.30 a.m. The raiding team boarded the vehicles from Adivaram junction bordering Wayanad and Kozhikode districts.

Twelve buses were checked when they reached Palayam in the city while three at Manjeri in Malappuram district. Most of the goods were transported without proper bills and some of the goods that had bills were undervalued, officials said.

Notices were served on the bus companies and owners under various sections of the Value Added Tax. The owners would have to remit a penalty to regain the goods. The bus companies were served notices since the vehicles transported goods without proper bills and addresses.

The department had earlier detected that goods worth lakhs of rupees had been illegally transported from Bangalore to Kozhikode. Intelligence officers P.S. Soman, P. Chathukutty and P. Bhaktavalsanan assisted the raids.

Two months ago the department seized unauthorized goods worth over Rs.1.5 crore from various railway stations in north Kerala. More than 600 bundles of goods valued at Rs.60 lakh were seized from the Kozhikode and West Hill railway stations. It was found that electronic and electrical items, textiles, sanitary ware, steel plates, machine tools and plastic goods were transported in large quantities from other States to the city.
