M.V. Raghavan Kozhikode: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) leaders should seriously think of the consequences of withdrawing support to the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government at the Centre at a crucial juncture, Communist Marxist Party (CMP) leader M.V. Raghavan has said. He was inaugurating a two-day convention of the Kerala Socialist Youth Federation (KSYF) at Jaya Auditorium here on Friday. “The CPI(M) should understand that their act of withdrawal of support will only help communal forces to come to power,” he said. Mr. Raghavan said the CPI(M) should explain clearly to the people of the dangers involved in signing the nuclear deal with the United States. On the textbook issue, Mr. Raghavan reiterated his stand that “there was nothing anti-religious” in the Class VII social science textbook. However, he said that trying to crush the agitation with physical might of party organs like Democratic Youth Federation (DYFI) would only worsen the situation. “The agitators should be brought to the table and the issue should be sorted out through discussions,” he said. Later, a symposium on “Youth and development of Kerala” was inaugurated by noted sculptor M.V. Devan. He said the education system should succeed in inculcating the idea that every job has it own dignity. “Unfortunately, our society thinks that only doctors and engineers command social respect,” he said. Criticising the shortcomings of the modern education system, Mr. Devan said it was a tragedy that most of the so-called ‘educated’ people in our country behave like ‘uncivilised’ people. CMP leaders V. Raghavan and C.P. John spoke.
