A platform to showcase skills

CHENNAI: Think Gulliver and the image of the ‘tall’ Gulliver being tied down by tiny strings and tens of Lilliputians clambering over him comes to the mind. Sand sculpture artist Ranjan Kumar Ganguli from Orissa has recreated the magic of the famous tale from Gulliver’s Travels at Come on Kidz – Sirar Sangamam which got under way at Chennai Trade Centre, Nandambakkam, on Thursday.

Working for seven hours he has created a 50-foot-long Gulliver with two big truck loads of river sand at the fun-filled event, which is on till Sunday. “Children love Gulliver and his tales... most of them would have studied the tale at school. This would help them get a better image of the scales of Gulliver and the tiny Lilliputians,” he explained.

Member of Parliament Kanimozhi, who inaugurated the event, said she was happy that a platform had been created for children, parents and teachers. She also said that the Sirar Sangamam would be replicated in major cities in Tamil Nadu next year. She interacted with the children of Grace Home from Anna Nagar and gave them gifts.

Folk dances

Tamil Maiyam founder Father Jegath Gaspar Raj said schoolchildren would be provided training in folk arts of Tamil Nadu and that next year they would have the opportunity to perform folk dances at the Come on Kidz – Sirar Sangamam. Students of class I of Padma Seshadri Bala Bhavan — S. Saieshwar and S.Akshaya — kick-started the talent shows.

On Friday, Hyundai Motors would organise a drawing competition from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. for students of Classes V, VI and VII. Those who want to take part in the Chennai Marathon on August 31 may register at the Tamil Maiyam stall. The Sirar Sangamam is being organised jointly by Tamil Maiyam and Eventspro Skykomm.

Entry to the event is free for students and for adults a booklet on the layout to the event is priced at Rs.30 each.
