MALAPPURAM: Panakkad Sayed Umerali Shihab Thangal, Sunni leader, and younger brother of Indian Union Muslim League State president Sayed Mohammedali Shihab Thangal, died at a private hospital here on Thursday night. The Thangal, 66, who had been under treatment for cancer for less than a year, breathed his last around 10.30 p.m. He was the State president of the Samastha Kerala Sunni Yuvajana Sangham (SYS), chairman of the Wakf Board, and vice-president of the Samastha Kerala Jamiyyathul Ulama. He was Parliamentary board chairman of the Indian Union Muslim League during the 2006 Assembly elections. He was formerly treasurer of the Samastha Kerala Jamiyyathul Ulama. The Thangal was virtually the bridge between the Muslim League and the Samastha Kerala Jamiyyathul Ulama, the Sunni faction named after E.K. Aboobacker Musliar. The funeral will take place at Panakkad near here at 4 p.m. on Friday.
