Periyar Action Plan still in cold storage

KOCHI: The proposed Periyar Action Plan is in the cold storage two years after the State Pollution Control Board announced its decision to rejuvenate the river.

G. Rajamohan, Chairman of the board, had said here on July 27, 2006 that the board would submit a detailed project report (DPR) to the National River Conservation Directorate within two months.

He had also said that the board will also prepare an action plan for conservation of Karamana river along with the Periyar Action Plan. The Chairman had said that these action plan reports would carry major recommendations for saving the rivers from extinction.

Sources in the board said the preparation of the project report is moving at a sluggish pace. The board has not even announced its plan of action for rejuvenating the river, they said. Records show that the board failed to initiate any steps for drafting the report for two years after its Chairman announced in 2006 that the DPR would be submitted within two months. In February this year, the board woke up from its slumber. Mr. Rajmohan then said that the board had recommended that IIT Roorkee be given the task of preparing a detailed project report on the proposed Periyar Action Plan.
