Rath Yatra begins today

Staff Reporter

VISAKHAPATNAM: The nine-day annual chariot festival of Lord Jagannath will begin here on Friday.

The Utkal Sanskrutika Samaj will celebrate the car festival (rath yatra) by pulling the chariot of Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra from its temple near All India Radio to Gundicha ghar in Lawson’s Bay Colony (near Shanti Ashram) for annual sojourn.

It will conduct bahuda yatra , known as return yatra, on July 12.

The Jagannath temple on the Main Road has also made grand arrangements for the chariot festival.

Like in the past, the car festival will be celebrated in the Lord Jagannath temple complex in Ukkunagaram by the employees and their families of Visakhapatnam Steel Plant.

The festival will commence on Friday with Gundicha yatra and will culminate on July 12 with the return journey. The festival will end with a community dinner on July 13.

As part of cultural programme, Odissi and folk dances will be performed by artists from Orissa.

An exhibition-cum-sale of handloom and handicrafts will be an added attraction near the venue.
