Nedumbassery: In an effort to save the Periyar, the river that provides drinking water as well as irrigation water for most parts of central Kerala, the Nationalist Youth Congress (NYC) has launched a Periyar Protection Force. The force will initiate a plan to find out the major pollutants of the river. Two groupsIt would include two groups of 10 members each and the duty of the members would be to find out the pollutants of the river and to pass on the information to authorities concerned, said Sebi. V. Sebastian, NYC vice-president. The protection force has already made a list of the suspected polluting sources of the river so that their waste management procedures would be brought under scrutiny. The team, with the help of the Right To Information Act, would also be ensuring that the construction of various buildings on the banks of the river is not in violation of the green norms initiated by the government.
