Says reward for the police will be given by the government
Says panchayat will be responsible for students’ failure

MALAPPURAM: Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan criticised the police for accepting reward from the public for investigating the South Malabar Gramin Bank theft case, in which gold and cash worth more than Rs.8 crore had been stolen from the bank’s Chelembra branch.

The Minister told reporters here on Thursday that the police would concentrate only on such cases if they started accepting rewards. He was addressing the media after taking salute at the passing out parade of the new police trainees at Malabar Special Police (MSP) grounds here.

The Home Minister said that the reward for the police would be given by the government. If the people begin rewarding the police for successful theft cases, then the police will be keen only to investigate cases that have scope for rewards, he said.

Referring to Kalpakancheri panchayat council’s decision to prohibit the Class 7 textbook in schools in the panchayat, Mr. Balakrishnan said that the civic body’s move would destroy the students’ future.

The panchayat had passed a resolution not to teach the controversial book in schools within its limits. “The panchayat will be solely responsible if the students fail owing to prohibition of the book in question,” the Minister said.

According to him, the panchayat has no authority to proscribe a textbook from the curriculum.

Mr. Balakrishnan described destruction of books in protest against some references as a barbaric act.
