Against hartal: A poster deriding hartals put up by the Hartal Virudha Munnani at the Stadium Corner in Kannur on Thursday. PALAKKAD: The police arrested 16 activists of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) who tried to obstruct the services of a Kerala State Road Transport Corporation bus at Mannarkkad on Thursday during the hartal called by the VHP. The hartal was total and peaceful in the district. Educational institutions and business establishments remained closed. Though banks were kept open, there was no clearing and other business transactions in the absence of employees and customers. The KSRTC operated long-distance bus services to Coimbatore and Ernakulam on convoy basis. Four-wheelers and public transport vehicles kept off the road. Peaceful in KannurOur Special Correspondent writes from Kannur: The dawn-to-dusk hartal called by the Vishsa Hindu Parishad (VHP) on Thursday was near total in the district. Normal life was hit by the hartal as shops remained closed and vehicles were off the roads, except two-wheelers. Windscreen of a Karnataka Road Transport Corporation Bus was smashed in stone-throwing by hartal supporters near Melechovva here. The Kerala State Road Transport Corporation did not operate its normal services. The hartal also paralysed the functioning of government offices here. Educational institutions here also remained closed. ProcessionThe hartal supporters took out a procession in the town in the morning. The Hartal Virudha Munnani, that wa launching a campaign against hartals, exhibited a poster mocking the hartals.
