VC to inaugurate maiden meeting tomorrow MALAPPURAM: Calicut University is set to float an organization that would bring under a single umbrella all those who studied at the university campus and its sub-centres in the last four decades. The Calicut University Alumni Association would become a reality when Vice-Chancellor Anwar Jahan Zuberi inaugurates the forum at the university Seminar Complex on Saturday morning. Scores of alumni working in, and retired from, various fields in different parts of the country are expected to attend the inaugural meeting on Saturday. Former Vice-Chancellors, teachers, ministers and professionals who excelled in their respective areas would attend the maiden meeting. T.M. Vijayan, convener of an ad-hoc committee that worked for the genesis of the alumni body, said that the organization would go functional from Saturday with new office-bearers at the helm. The formation of the Alumni Association, which would have membership strength of thousands, would mark the 40th anniversary celebrations of Calicut University. Although most teaching departments of Calicut University have independent alumni organizations, the university is floating a larger body for its entire campus and distant centres for the first time in 40 years. Dr. Vijayan said that it would be festive time for the campus. Calicut University is yet to have a big festive occasion after it celebrated its silver jubilee in 1993. A.N.P. Ummerkutty, then Vice-Chancellor, had led the celebrations by introducing many a project.
