Steps to end water crisis taken

PALAKKAD: The steps taken by the Kerala Water Authority (KWA) to end the decade-long supply of drinking water in tanker lorries in the drought-prone areas of Vadakarapathy and Eruthempathy panchayats have started yielding result.

The Chittur Sub-Division of the KWA had commissioned two drinking water supply schemes in the panchayats earlier to mitigate the drinking water crisis in the rain shadow region of Chittur taluk. With the partial commissioning of improvement works in Eruthempathy panchayat by constructing a sump-cum-booster pump house at R.V. Puthur on Friday by District Collector K.S. Sreenivas, the drinking water crisis in the high-lying areas would be solved. This would help stop supply by tanker lorries, said K. Jayachandran, Assistant Executive Engineer, KWA, Chittur.

An amount of Rs.2.38 crore was spent between 2004 and 2007 for supplying drinking water in tanker lorries in the water starved areas of Chittur.
