K.T Thomas quits Janaseva

Special Correspondent

KOCHI: Former judge of the Supreme Court K.T. Thomas has resigned as chief patron of Janaseva Sisu Bhavan, an Aluva-based charity working for children’s welfare, which was recently rocked by allegations.

Mr. Thomas, who had recently replaced V.R. Krishna Iyer as chief patron, confirmed the resignation. He told The Hindu that he would soon be taking over as chairman of the National Police Reforms Commission. As such, he said, it would difficult for him to continue to be associated with Janaseva.

The charity had recently been accused of misappropriating the large sums of money it used to get from philanthropists as well as from thousands of charity boxes it had installed at shops and offices.

Its chairman, Jose Maveli, had also been planning to make a Malayalam movie at reported cost of over Rs. 2 crores.

One of the allegations against Mr. Maveli was that he had diverted the money he had raised for the children’s home to film-making.
