In service of tribals

VISAKHAPATNAM: The General and Environmental Education for Tribal Health Action (GEETHA), a non-governmental voluntary organisation has covered total health care services in 34 tribal mandals during the first year of its ‘Geetha Tribal Health Care Project’ for tribals.

GEETHA is celebrating the project’s first anniversary on Saturday.

Informing the media persons about the first anniversary celebrations, the project director K. Steevenson said in 34 tribal mandals under Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam and East Godavari districts, nearly 17,53,000 people had been benefited.

Apart from providing health care to the tribal population, it conducted health awareness and educated them on the preventive aspects. The volunteers carried out door-to-door surveys in all villages, recorded the health problems and counselled families about the minor ailments such as fever, pains, diahorea etc.

On the spot free treatment was provided and health problems such as leprosy, malaria, filaria, TB and HIV etc. that required immediate doctors attention were also recommended to specialists. The staff arranged for cataract surgeries through its tie-ups with various eye hospitals. Once in three four month’s duration, a mega health camp was organised with specialists and health awareness campaigns were also its components.

The NGO is planning to solve the problem of contaminated drinking water in tribal areas in August . It also wants to acquire suitable land between Visakhapatnam and Vizianagaram cities for construction of a multi-speciality hospital, an old age home, a school and staff quarters.

Play back singer, actor and music director S.P. Balasubramanyam, Collector Sanjay Kumar and Andhra University Vice-Chancellor B. Satyanarayana would grace the celebrations.
