Remembering Basheer’s legacy

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: Vaikom Mohammed Basheer had a vibrant relation with the city. He ran his book shop here.

Even after moving to his ‘kingdom’ at Beypore, those who were influenced by Basheer continued to cherish his stay here.

For them, and all lovers of Basheer literature, Friday is going to be special. Bank Employees’ Arts Movement Ernakulam (BEAME) will organise a theatre adaptation of Basheer’s first short story Premalekhanam (Love Letter) at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan hall at 6.30 p.m.

The adaptation is being made by ‘Soorya’ Krishnamoorthy, with Amal Raj coming on stage as Kesavan Nair, a bank employee who is the protagonist of the story and Lakshmi as Saramma, his lady love. Basheer Manakad has written the dialogues. Shijinath will handle the music and Krishnan will do the light settings for the play. Beame is inviting art lovers to be part of a new experience of the play, which is being presented in the arena theatre format.

And on Saturday, which is 14th death anniversary of Basheer, Beame will organise commemorative talks on him.
