Nanotechnology for food processing

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: Nanotechnology has the potential to revolutionise the food processing industry. It has an important role to play in packaging and food safety, according to experts.

Research has been in progress on the multiple application of nanotechnology in the industry. Nanotechnologies could be used in cultivation, production as well as packaging. Several European researchers have focused on developing nanosensors to detect chemicals, pathogens and toxins in food. Such a sensor will enable people to test the produce at the farm or at the processing and packaging units instead of getting the samples tested in laboratories.

Nanocapsules containing fish oil has reportedly been developed abroad. The micro-capsules will break open only when they reach the stomach. This eliminates the unpleasant smell of the oil, according to sources associated with the Ministry of Food Processing Industries.

The government has devised a National Nanoscience and Technology initiative for encouraging research and development. Research in the private sector will help boost the efforts in the field.
