Doctors warned against demanding money from people Kitchen staff directed to use fresh vegetables Bangalore: Irked over the poor maintenance and unhygienic conditions prevailing in the government-run K.C. General Hospital and lack of proper maintenance, Health Minister B. Sriramulu on Tuesday directed the officials to issue a show-cause notice to the hospital authorities. Speaking to presspersons after conducting a surprise inspection of the hospital, the Minister said: “It is surprising that you people, who have been preaching on the dos and don’ts for chikungunya, have kept your own premises in such a bad condition. People who visit here will get the disease instead of treatment,” the Minister said. Appalled over the lack of cleanliness in some of the wards and toilets in the hospital, the Minister warned the hospital Medical Superintendent M. Vishwa Aradhya to ensure that hygiene was maintained in the hospital. “I will inspect all Government hospitals once in 15 days. If I do not find a changed scenario during my next visit, I will not hesitate to initiate disciplinary action against you,” he told the doctor. He said he had received several complaints from the public about poor maintenance, corruption and indifferent attitude of the doctors in Government hospitals. “If I get to know anything about any doctor demanding money from people, I will slap a heavy penalty on the doctor and also initiate action against him,” he said. The Minister, who later inspected the kitchen of the hospital, directed the staff to use fresh vegetables and maintain cleanliness. He also inspected the out-patient department, medicine dispensing unit, pharmacy and various wards. He directed the Medical Superintendent to ensure that work on the dialysis and intensive care units was expedited. He wanted officials to buy more beds for the hospital to ensure that no patient returns without treatment. Dr. Aradhya explained to the Minister that the waste was not cleared from the premises because it was the first day of a new cleanliness contract. “The term of the previous contract ended recently and it was only today that the new contractor took over,” he said. Principal Secretary (Health and Family Welfare) M. Madan Gopal, Health Commissioner P.N. Srinivasachary and Malleswaram MLA Ashwathnarayana accompanied the Minister.
