Anju George wins gold

HANOI: Long jumper Anju George equalled her best performance for the season with a 6.55-metre jump in the concluding leg of the Asian Grand Prix series here on Monday.

On a rain-affected day, the Indian women’s 4x400m relay team clocked 3:33.08 in winning the gold while the men’s longer relay team timed 3:07.09 while prevailing over Sri Lanka and Botswana, the last-named team being a late addition in an effort to aim Olympic qualification.

The latest timing by the Indian men’s team does not give it a chance to figure in the Olympic qualification race.

The results: Men: Triple jump: 1. Amarjeet Singh (Ind) 16.63, 2. Gu Junjie (Chn) 16.60, 3. Evgeniy Ektov (Kaz) 16.38, 5. Renjith Maheswary (Ind) 16.34.

Shot put: 1. Satyendra Singh (Ind) 17.84, 2. Polymeg Chatchwal (Tha) 17.42, 3. Grigoriy Kamulya (Kaz) 17.32, 4. Om Prakash (Ind) 16.83.

Women: 400m: 1. Marina Maslenko (Kaz) 53.38, 2. Subhashini Chandrika (Sri) 53.84, 3. Ana Gavryushenko (Kaz) 54.56, 4. Sini Jose (Ind) 54.68.

Long jump: 1. Anju George (Ind) 6.55, 2. Marestella Torres (Phi) 6.38, 3. Zhang Lan (Chn) 6.36. Discus: 1. Li Yangfeng (Chn) 59.81, 2. Harwant Kaur (Ind) 58.50, 3. Sun Taifeng (Chn) 58.22, 4. Krishna Poonia (Ind) 56.77, 5. Seema Antil (Ind) 53.81.
