CHENNAI: The monthly revenue from the Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) between Chennai Beach and Velachery is to cross Rs.1 crore mark. Passengers’ patronage for the services is picking up after the introduction of 9-car rakes from June 20. The average daily revenue was about Rs.2.65 lakh when only six-car rakes were in operation in the section. After the introduction of 9-car rakes during rush hour, the daily revenue has increased to Rs.3.62 lakh. The number of passengers utilising the MRTS services in a day has increased from 55,000 to 79,000. At this rate, the monthly revenue might cross Rs.1 crore mark, Union Minister of State for Railways R.Velu said here on Monday. Releasing the new time-table here, the Minister said that on an average, there had been an increase of one lakh passengers a day in the suburban services. To meet the increasing passenger traffic, the Chennai Division has received two additional rakes of nine cars each. In the Chennai Beach – Tambaram section, 12 rakes out of 23 had been replaced with 12 car coaches. In the Tambaram – Chengalpattu section, three 12-car services in the morning and four 12- car services in the evening have been introduced to meet the passenger rush. The division was expecting four additional rakes and the receipt of additional rakes would enable the division to increase the frequency in the suburban sections still further.
