5,184 minutes of power interruptions a year

Special Correspondent

BANGALORE: Do you know the average duration of power interruptions per consumer in a year in Bangalore? According to Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (BESCOM) Managing Director Tushar Girinath, it is a whopping 5,184 minutes.

Making a presentation on the plans of BESCOM for the city at a summit of the Agenda for Bengaluru Development here on Saturday, he said this included about 1,000 hours of interruptions due to the transmission problems.

Contrary to this scenario, Japan had only 11 minutes of interruption per consumer per year, the U.S. 90 minutes, the U.K. 77 minutes and France 58 minutes.

To reduce these interruptions, the BESCOM has taken up the distribution automation system for the first time in the country. He told The Hindu that the interruptions were expected to reduce to less than 1,000 minutes after the implementation of this Rs. 563-crore project. The work on the project was expected to be complete in about four years. The project would enable instant detection of fault if there was any interruption in power supply. BESCOM was in the process of using aerial bunched cable system for the 5,000 km of low tension overhead lines in the congested areas.
