Journalist unions hold parallel events

Staff Reporter

ELURU: The parallel shows organised by the rival journalist unions held on the same day at different places in the district put the VIPs in a dilemma over their participation. The district branch of the Andhra Pradesh Union of Working of Journalists (APUWJ) conducted a ‘mega health camp’ for tribals at Bhuttayagudem in association with the local Press Club on Sunday. The district unit of the Andhra Pradesh Journalists’ Union (APJU) held its one-day conference at Bhimavaram.

District in-charge Minister Pilla Subhashchandra Bose and Minister for Minor Irrigation Maganti Venkateswara Rao, Collector G. Jayalakshmi, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police S.A. Rheza and Superintendent of Police B. Balakrishna were among the VIPs who received invitation from both the unions. It’s the police top brass who appeared to be a confused lot in making preparations for security arrangements for the VIPs.

However, a call from the PCC higher-ups to the Ministers, seeking their participation in an emergency meeting to be held in Hyderabad in the wake of the call made by party president Sonia Gandhi on general elections, saved the police authorities. Even as a spokesman from APJU said the parallel show was planned by the rival union in a bid to stall the growth of their union in the district, the leaders from APUWJ said it was only coincidental.

Dharna planned

Meanwhile, the APJU adopted a resolution at its conference, demanding scrapping of cases foisted against Andhra Jyothi editor and two of its reporters by the police.

It also decided to stage a massive dharna in Hyderabad resenting the increasing attacks on the print and electronic media personnel.
