Couple arrested on charges of murder

CHENNAI: A couple were arrested on Friday in connection with the murder of two women in Tirumangalam area last year.
Police identified the arrested as K. Jayakumar (31) and his wife Malini (28), who had resorted to murder to tide over their financial problems.
Interrogation revealed that Jayakumar, a painter by profession, was an alcoholic who sold his kidney to tide over debts. When he ran out of money, he allegedly resorted to murder on the advice of Malini. He would seek out women who were alone at home and cut their throat.
He would then steal the gold chain they were wearing and disappear. He confessed to killing Tamil Selvi, a resident of a multi-storeyed apartment in Tirumangalam, on May 12 last year.
On December 12, he killed Jayamala around 3 p.m. at her house in the same area and stole her gold jewellery. In his confession, he said he was present among the people who had gathered near Jayamala’s house when the police were conducting their investigation.
