Drive to discipline autorickshaw drivers planned

Staff Reporter

CHENNAI: A drive to discipline autorickshaw drivers will be launched by the traffic police and the Transport Department on Tuesday.

Announcing this at a press meet here on Saturday, Commissioner of Police R. Sekar said the drivers would be told to install and use fare meters and avoid meandering around bus stops.

Action would be initiated against those not using the meters and those found over-charging.

In the last 26 days, 4,649 cases were registered against autorickshaw drivers and Rs.5 lakh collected as fine.

A total of 24 autorickshaws involved in traffic violations were impounded.

Mr. Sekar said the police and the Transport Department have begun clearing obstructions such as vendors from the road to facilitate easy traffic flow. Noting that the department conducted raids in several parts of the city over the past fortnight, he said in the past week alone, 3,340 people were arrested as a preventive measure.

It included 31 anti-social elements and 58 ex-convicts.

A total of 213 persons were also arrested for drunken driving, he said.

Last month, 49 persons were arrested in connection with 37 cases and items worth Rs.17 lakh were recovered from them.

The recovered items that were displayed at his office included 148.5 sovereigns of gold jewellery, five motorcycles, and cash totalling Rs.2.78 lakh.

He handed over the valuables to the owners.
