Ponmudy clarifies on government quota in self-financing colleges
Special Correspondent
CHENNAI: State Higher Education Minister K. Ponmudy clarified on Saturday that all 278 private engineering colleges will hand over 65 per cent of the seats to the government quota.
Responding to the charges made by Pattali Makkal Katchi founder S. Ramadoss that only 165 colleges had agreed to hand over 65 per cent of the seats and that the others had refused, Mr. Ponmudy said this was not true.
The only reason why the members of the self-financing colleges had not signed an agreement to hand over 65 per cent of the seats was because the case was in court and they were afraid that it would be in contempt.
Payment of fees
Mr. Ponmudy said students could chose to pay their fees to any of the three institutions specified — Anna University, the college allotted to them or to banks.
Some colleges were willing to accept the fee amount in instalments and others, to collect less than the specified fee. In this case, he said, it would be better for students to pay the fees to the self-financing college directly.
Dismisses charge
He dismissed Dr. Ramadoss’ allegation that if students were required to pay directly to the colleges, they might be forced to pay more.
