Teaching goes digital in school

MYSORE: The conventional teaching process using the blackboard, chalk and duster will be making way for 40- inch plasma television screens in a city school, introducing the digital touch to schools.

With the television screens connected to a dedicated server installed inside the school campus, the teacher can now conjure up images, graphics, animation and video clippings that can capture the imagination of the students during the teaching process. The use of digital resources is expected to make teaching not only more efficient, but is expected to arouse the interest of students.

Commissioner for Public Instruction G. Kumar Nayak inaugurated the Smart Class, a digital learning initiative, at Ideal Jawa Rotary School in Mysore on Saturday, marking a major departure from the traditional teaching-learning process. “Even though the Smart Class project will not entirely replace the conventional teaching methods, the digital initiative will help teachers supplement conventional teaching with digital resources,” he said.

Chairman of Ideal Jawa Rotary School’s managing committee, Dinesh, told The Hindu that the school had introduced digital learning for classes 5, 6 and 7 to begin with. “Next year, we will expand the initiative to three more classes. Our ultimate aim is to have digital learning from LKG to VII standard,” he said. Right now, the plasma television screens, which are also called Digiboards, have been installed in all three sections of the classes.

However, Digiboards will not completely replace the blackboards and chalks. “It can be used simultaneously with blackboards,” he said.
