Kolkata: The West Bengal government is willing to discuss with the Gorkha Janamukti Morcha (GJM) leadership any issue that might take forward the concept of greater regional autonomy for the Darjeeling hills but “short of a separate State.” Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee will be meeting a GJM delegation here on Friday for discussions on ways to bring back normality in the region. The GJM leadership, however, insists that the creation of a separate State to be carved out of Darjeeling district and certain areas contiguous to it is the only issue that it is willing to talk about. “The delegation that will be meeting the Chief Minister has been directed not to talk on any issue but our demand for Gorkhaland State,” GJM president Bimal Gurung told The Hindu over the telephone from Darjeeling on Thursday. The government will be going to the talks “with an open mind and is willing to talk on any issue short of a separate State,” Chief Secretary Amit Kiran Deb said.
