KATHMANDU: The Seven Party Alliance (SPA) on Wednesday agreed to amend the interim Constitution to elect the President, Vice-President, Prime Minister and the Constituent Assembly’s Chairman. As per their signed draft, a simple majority would be needed to elect or remove persons occupying these posts. However, the President and the Vice-President can only be impeached by a two-thirds majority. The amendment proposal was tabled during Wednesday’s Constituent Assembly meeting, but as the SPA could not conclude the meeting as per schedule, it would be presented during Thursday’s meeting. The SPA’s formal approval to the amendment would pave the way for government formation. It is most likely that Nepal will have a President in a couple of days, said a senior UML leader on Tuesday, after attending the SPA meeting. Once the amendment is tabled, the CA members will be given 72 hours to study it, after which the Constitution will be amended.
