Australia makes 273

ARNOS VALE (St. Vincent): Opener Shaun Marsh hit 81 on debut to pilot Australia to 273 for eight off 50 overs against the West Indies in their opening ODI here on Tuesday.

Wicketkeeper Brad Haddin made 50 while Michael Hussey scored 44.

Darren Sammy (two for 31) and Dwayne Bravo (two for 54) led the way for the home team. Left-arm spinner Sulieman Benn was also impressive and took one for 39 off 10 overs.

Marsh and Shane Watson (31) provided an enterprising start after Australia was sent in under overcast skies. The pair added 75 for the first wicket in 12.5 overs.

Marsh, who performed extremely well in the Indian Premier League, anchored the innings and struck seven fours and a six off 97 balls.

Watson, in his first ODI since last year’s World Cup final, hit four fours off 27 balls.

Bravo made the crucial breakthrough when Watson came too far across his stumps and was leg before. — AP
