Celebrating unforgettable iconic characters from both fact and fiction Animal Planet’s brand new series “Animal Icons” will be premiered on July 2. “Animal Icons” will unravel the historic rise in popularity of animal icons like King Kong, Garfield, Lassie and Godzilla who have as large and as loyal a fan-following as any leading Hollywood star. Each episode of the six-part series will focus on a different character from the comic book world who draws his/her superpowers from members of the animal kingdom. From seriously cool characters like Batman and Spider-Man to the fun-loving Mighty Mouse and Penguin, a menagerie of heroes and villains will be featured in the series. “Comic Book Creatures,” to be aired on July 2, features interviews with legendary comic book writer Stan Lee, comic book expert David Hayter and actors who have portrayed popular animal characters. “Animals on Wheels,” beaming on July 9, takes an illuminating look at how cars and animals have become irrevocably intertwined. It will explore why animals continue to inspire car makers in their designs and attract car buyers to the final result. “Animated Animals,” which will go on air on July 16, takes viewers on a funny and informative tour through the history of cartoon cinema and television to explain how animals in animation are usually metaphors for the best, worst and funniest aspects of human behaviour. “Christmas Animals,” which will hit the television screen on July 23, will reveal the fascinating origins of animals’ association with Christmas and how the two have become virtually inseparable. It will feature film and television highlights from “The Muppet Christmas Carol”, “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” and “The Simpsons.” “Garfield,” to be screened on July 30, takes a close look at the feisty feline who has clawed his way to become the No. 1 comic strip, television and big screen celebrity. Arguably the greatest monster movie of all time, “King Kong” set the industry standard for fantasy film-making more than 70 years ago. Episode “King Kong,” to be telecast on August 6 will show that the special effects employed by Willis O’Brien and directors like Merian C. Cooper and Ernest Shoedsack have inspired a new crop of ambitious film-makers. Madhur Tankha
