Mixed weekend for Chandhok

CHENNAI: Karun Chandhok had a mixed weekend at Magny Cours in the fourth round of the 2008 GP2 season, adding to his points tally with seventh place in Saturday’s feature race, but having to retire from Sunday’s sprint race following a collision.

Chandhok started the sprint race from second — the top eight Saturday places are reversed on Sunday’s grid.

However, engine trouble meant he dropped back early. Just as he was battling back into the point-scoring positions after changing tyres, he clashed with Saturday’s winner Giorgio Pantano.

“…After changing tyres, I was really catching the group of cars in front including Giorgio, but at one stage about five of us tried to squeeze into the chicane and (only) he and I didn’t come out unscathed! It damaged my front wing and the brake duct, so I had to retire,” said Chandhok.

In the feature race, he started from eighth on the grid, and was delayed in the pits by Pastor Maldonado driving very close to the mechanics. This meant he lost a place to Jerome d’Ambrosio.

Watching Chandhok at Magny Cours was Sachin Tendulkar, who was attending as a guest of the Force India F-1 team.

Chandhok’s next race will be at Silverstone in Great Britain on July 5 and 6.
