Day of drawn games

Arvind Aaron

Chennai: Drawn games ruled round seven of the Tamil Nadu chess championship at the Nehru Stadium here on Friday.

In an unclear position, joint leaders G.B. Prakash of Indian Bank and P. Maheswaran of S.R.M. College drew to retain their lead. They have six points each from seven rounds.

The third place is shared by 10 players with 5.5 points and it includes second seed B.T. Muralikrishnan of Southern Railway, Madurai.

Error

Top seed international master Prakash turned down an early draw offer despite playing black.

He obtained a slight advantage with the Dutch defence but a positional error made the position unclear.

Prakash then offered and got a draw.

Muralikrishnan obtained an advantage with white but slipped in the rooks-and-minor piece ending to draw with Saravana Krishnan of St. Joseph’s College after 53 moves.

On the third board, D.P. Singh of Southern Railway came 40 minutes late to the board and took a six-move draw with black against Arun Karthik of Chennai.
