DETERMINED: Samantha Stosur stretched her comeback from illness by reaching the semifinals of the Eastbourne Championships.

NOTTINGHAM: Defending champion Ivo Karlovic of Croatia beat Andreas Seppi of Italy 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 on Thursday to reach the semifinals of the Nottingham Open. The fourth-seeded Karlovic will face No. 8 Gael Monfils of France, who ousted Vincent Spadea of the United States 7-6(4), 6-2 at the Wimbledon warmup tournament.

Monfils won their only previous meeting in Monte Carlo two months ago but that was on clay, Karlovic’s least favourite surface.

Ferrer beats Ancic

Two-time champion Mario Ancic of Croatia, the last man to beat Roger Federer on grass, fell 6-4, 7-6(4) to top-seeded Spaniard David Ferrer in the quarterfinals at the Ordina Open at s’Hertogenbosch.

Unseeded Argentine Juan Martin del Potro advanced to his second career ATP semifinal, following a 2-6, 6-3, 6-1 victory over two-time former finalist Arnaud Clement of France.

Seventh-seeded Argentine Guillermo Canas beat Viktor Troicki, a Serbian qualifier, 6-2, 6-2 in a rain-interrupted match. Canas will next meet Frenchman Marc Gicquel, who avenged his 2006 Metz semifinal defeat to Jurgen Melzer.

Stosur in last four

Australian Samantha Stosur advanced to the semifinals at the Eastbourne International Open with a 7-6(3), 6-4 defeat of Dane Caroline Wozniacki on Thursday.

Stosur, getting back into form after a long illness, will play eighth seed Nadia Petrova in Friday’s semifinals. Stosur returned to tennis in April after seven months out with Lyme disease and viral meningitis.
